April 15, 2020

Dear YBMS Families,

Without a doubt, the past few weeks have presented new challenges, a lot of questions, new or additional stressors, unforeseen struggles, and probably some boredom for our students. The changes that have come with social distancing, stay-at-home mandates, and family, home and work situations have certainly impacted all of our lives. The YBMS School Counselors, Mr. Barrick and Mrs. Klock, continue to be here as a resource for not only your students, but also your families.

As we transition into our remote learning mode, Mr. Barrick and Mrs. Klock will be delivering social emotional lessons via google classroom that are considered optional completion for students just like the Creative Arts and Wellness/Fitness courses. The links to the lesson plans and google classroom (where all activities will be housed), are listed at the top of our Counseling Services webpage. The code for students to join the Counselor Café google classroom has been sent to your students, as we want to protect the security of the classroom. (If you need us to send it directly to you as the parent/guardian, please email us.) It is suggested in the Continuity of Education Plan that students work on these assignments on Fridays, but the lesson material will be available all week for students to complete at their leisure. We are hoping to focus on topics that reflect what students are going through right now and will help initiate or support conversations you are having at home.

Additionally, Mr. Barrick and Mrs. Klock will both have daily virtual office hours. The links to our Office Hours sign-up genius pages are also listed at the end of this letter. Students or parents can sign up for 15-minute time slots if they wish to meet with one of the counselors regarding any concerns, questions, or struggles they may have during this time. We will continually check our school e-mails and phone messages and do our best to respond in as quick a manner as possible. Please know that we might not be able to answer some questions that relate to school operation. For that information, please refer to information that is posted by the school district. Please remember to use the appropriate resources in the event of a mental health emergency. Links to mental health resources as well as the district mindfulness activities are also linked below as a great resource to helping with mental health during this time.

We will continue to connect with students and families with messages of positivity via Instagram (@YBMS_counselors) in addition to our google classroom and flipgrid sites (accessed through google classroom). We will also continue with our Lunch Zooms with students, as well as setting up small group zooms regarding specific topics students have expressed an interest in via a zoom survey.

Please know that we absolutely value each of our students and their families, and we want you to know that we care! We truly miss interacting with our YBMS Bubblers each day in the halls of YBMS, but while we’re apart, we will be here for you, virtually!

Sincerely,

Danae Klock                   Elmer Barrick
